Summer reading is around the corner!

The Summer Reading Program begins on Monday and the DMPL will have lots for teens to do! Sign up for the Summer Reading Program to earn prizes for the time you spend reading this summer. We have three fun giveaways, for each 5 hours you read. There will be many fun, FREE events for teens to attend and participate in, such as learning some martial arts self-defense moves, calligraphy, cooking classes, African drumming, a visit from author MEG CABOT and much more! Check our events calendar to see what’s coming up at your DMPL location and preregister there if required. Also, teens entering 6th grade and up can volunteer  to help with the Summer Reading Program. Teens who volunteer at least 5 hours throughout the program will be invited to the pool & pizza party at the end of July and can also bring a friend! Interested teens should inquire at the location where they wish to volunteer. We hope to see you very soon!

Pool Party!

We greatly appreciate all of our teen volunteers who are such a big help throughout the Summer Reading Program. We are also very glad the rain stopped for a little while last Friday so that we could still have our pool party at Birdland pool! Thanks to all our volunteers who helped eat the pizza and ice cream and enjoyed the pool. Check out these pictures from the 2011 teen volunteer pool party!

Teen Advisory Board at Franklin

Would you like to voice your opinion about library materials, programs, and services for teens?  Help plan upcoming programs and special events for teens?  Chat about books, eat chocolate, and meet new people?  Try out new teen craft ideas like candymaking, shrinky dinks, and cardmaking…before anyone else?  How about earn voluteer hours, too?  The Teen Advisory Board at the Franklin Avenue Library does all of the that and more.  We meet once a month to discuss how to make the library a better place for teens, and have a lot of fun.  New members are always welcome.  Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 13th at 4:00pm, and we’ll be testing a new teen craft idea…designing and making your own erasers.  Hope you can join us!  Don’t forget the Franklin Avenue Library is currently at Merle Hay Mall.

Teen Volunteers

A Big Thanks to all of our teen summer volunteers.  Your help is essential during the summer reading program, and so greatly appreciated by all of us at the Des Moines Public Library.  Many of you were able to join us for the teen volunteer pool party at Birdland Pool, but for those who could not be there, please know we appreciate all of you.  Thanks for a great job and see you next summer!
